As promised, here's the extent
of my knowledge programming the DJXII. I've been able to get patterns
into the DJXII, but it was a struggle at first, Good luck and I hope
this helps. By

Programming Patterns in Cakewalk for the DJXII
-
The first thing I did was download the instrument definition
files found on the DJX User Group Site for both the DJX and
the DJX 2. If you don’t have the DJX you still have to download
both files as you’ll need the drum definitions found in the
DJX file.
-
I then downloaded the studioware for the DJX (now available
at the Yamaha DJX Users site. You can’t use the module that
lists effects, as the DJX and DJXII have different effect settings
in their midi programming, however, you can use the module that
has the cut off/resonance filter, modulation knobs, etc.; I
found this to be invaluable, as I didn’t have to try and enter
this information into the event list.
-
Lastly, I downloaded the instrument definition
text file found on
Jason
Powell’s web site You need this text so that you can match
patch numbers up for the drums, because while the DJX’s definition
files work for the drums, the patch numbers don’t work. Still
with me, like I said, this is pretty complicated to explain.
I’m now going to walk you through the basic set up in Cakewalk
and then its up to you.
-
First thing first, you need to open Cakewalk and go to track
9, double click where it says midi. That brings up the track
definition window. Click instruments, then on define and import.
Now open the DJX and DJXII definition files and click OK.
-
Once that’s done, you’ll still have open the track
definition window and select channel 9 for the sound card you’re
using under port channel, and Yamaha DJX drums under uses instrument.
-
You then have to refer to the text file to see
what drum patch you want to use and define it. For instance, if
I want to use the RHBox Kit, I select channel 9, bank [16256]
and then patch 12. Hit OK Now would be a good place to save.
-
If you refer to your DJXII
manual you’ll find that certain instruments have to go on
certain channels, so channel 9 always has to be the kick drum.
Once I have the channel, patch and bank selected for track 9 I
named the track and hit save. You then do the same procedure for
tracks 10-16, selecting their corresponding channels (so that
track 10 is assigned channel 10, etc.) I then named all the tracks
and saved once again. It’s probably a good idea to save this as
something along the lines of DJX IIb at default. It made my life
easier to only have to do this once; once I figured it out.
- Once you have that done, click a track at the far right corner
to select it and choose the piano roll. Put no information or notes
in the pattern until the 2nd measure. ** The DJXII uses this
space to put its system exclusive information. So, click your
mouse on number 2 and add a marker that you’ve named 1. You can
then program in a pattern. Once you have a pattern, however long
you like at the next measure add a marker and name that 2. You keep
going for all 10 patterns.
Hope this helped. As I said, it took me a long time to figure this
out, and I kind of pieced it together from the DJX II Manual, other
people’s advice, my experimentation with sequencers and accidents.
