"Why won't you come here? "
A girl jumps from a top of a building into the midst of neon signs.
"I don't have to exist in this world. "
Colorful neons glow over the fbwing blood.
Lain Iwakura -- she could sense the existence of "things that other people can't see or hear. " Otherwise, she was an ordinary junior-high girl who tended to be sligthly reserved.
Rumors about "Chisa Yomoda" a girl who committed suicide, was heard all around "Ouka Gakuen (a school Lain attends)" .According to the rumor, some students have received on e-mail from Chisa, who is supposed to be dead. One of Lain's close friends has received one,too. However, Lain has not been checking her mailbox out of difficulty nith dealing with the net. Her friend Alice advices her to check her mailmox.
Lain turns on her network computer "NAVI" upon returning home to check her mailbox. "Lain, you've got mail," goes NAVI.Lain asks, "From whom? " "Chisa Yomoda," replies NAVI.
"Hello, Lain. Howare you? "
"Do you remember the time we went home from school together? "
"I only forfeited my physical existence. This mail proves that I am still alive. "
"I sent this mail to tell that.Do you follow me? "
"You don't have to understand all this now. You'll soon begin to learn about what I'm saying, as all the others will... "
"I want you to realize that this mail is not a prank or anything of that sort, as the rumors in the school say. "
Lain asks, "why did you commit suicide? " to the e-mail that cannot talk back. A new line appears onto the screen.
"There is a god in this world. "
Lain attempts to discuss about the mail with her mother, but she gets nothing in response. She also tried to ask her father about it.
Lain says to her father, "I want a new NAVI... " Her father accepts her request and adds this statement:
"In this world, everything is linked in both the real world and the wired(network). That's now society operates. "
"By the way, why did you suddenly ask me to buy a new NAVI?"
Lain replies, "I have a friend I want to meet. "
In the next morning, Lain was taking her usual train to school. the train suddenly went to a stop and the announcement reports an accident. Those on the train say among themselves that a person has probably been run over. Lain looks out of the window, and sees blood dripping from the electric wires. Her conscience sinks into the deep, where she sees a girl diring into the train. With a shock, Lain comes to her mind again. She finds that she is in her classroom. A teacher warns her to pay attention, so Lain looks at the blackboard. The words written on it began to move and form a message, reading "Hurry, come to wired. " Lain's conscience once again drifts. She observes the presence of Chisa in her mind. Lain asks Chisa, "Chisa where is the place you're in ? "
But Chisa wasn't there any more.
