How To Send DJX Bulk Dumps To Your Computer:

There are two primary ways to get your personal samples, sequences, and patterns saved
to your computer. First if you have a DJX2 the process is relatively simple. Use the provided Yamaha DJX2 Pattern Edittor. However, if you use the DJX-1, the process has never been simple.

The Story

Yamaha Corporation overlooked the need to provide usable software or recommend possible software for use with the DJX-1. During the whole time the DJX-1 keyboard has been on the market, their forums and other yamaha related forums have had one basic theme and complaint.

"How do I save files from my DJX to my computer." After I purchased my DJX and saw that no one had the answer I took up the cause. My first attempt was to contact Yamaha's Corporate Office in Japan. I went straight to the headquarters because other had failed in their attempts for support from all other Yamaha divisions.

After several weeks I received a reply e-mail from a young Japanese woman from Yamaha's technical support. As with the other office she told me that Yamaha would not be able to comment or suggest any softwares by other vendors that might work with the DJX. Their solution at that time seemd obvious to anyone who opened up their users manual. Yamaha wanted everyone to purchase their midi filer hardware box. The cost was about the same as the DJX list cost. Looking back now, I think that perhaps their midi filer was a good way to go if you were to use it live and on tour. But for most of us, it was unreasonable to assume that we had the extra $400.00 to $500.00 dollars to spare. If we had that kind of money, we would have bought a better keyboard with a built in floppy disk drive.

A week later, I made contact with MC-Love of Abstract Reality. At that time and even now he seems to be one of the more knowledgable DJX users. MC-Love told me that what I needed was a "midi filer." I had no idea what that was, so i set of in a quest to find one. I spent the next month searching the internet and reviewing hundreds and hundreds of websites. I finally had given up for a month. At the end of the month I decided to try one more time to locate a file. I happened along a website that had a bunch of old, old software.

So I downloaded about a bunch of software files. I went one by one and tested each of them out on my DJX. None of them seemed to work. I gave up again. About a month later I was looking through the files I had downloaded and found one I did not test. I tried it and it worked.

I tested it several more times and it worked with all of the Bulk Sends. I then started posting it at all of the forums about the DJX and added it to a single web page. Within a month I had people from all across the world e-mailing me asking questions about the DJX and the software. Even several Yamaha divisions in other countries started refering people to me.

Thus began the 13 Inch Website. Since that time I have found and tested these SYX softwares and made them available for the Windows, Amiga, and Macintosh. With this said, let's get to the business you came for.

To do a basic bulk send or sample send from the DJX to your computer for storage purposes, you will need to download a "midi filer" software from our website. Next, make sure that your computer is connected to your DJX using appropriate midi cables. Your DJX must be turned on and set to the appropriate settings. (See page 94 to 101) for additional information in your Yamaha DJX-1 manual.

Here are the basic steps for saving bulk/sample djx information to a computer:

  1. Turn on your computer
  2. Turn on the DJX-1 (See use manual page 97)
  3. Turn off the (Part Control) and (Pattern Control) buttons. They are always on when the DJX powers up. (Push theses buttons to turn them off) In the following order press these buttons on time. (Song), (Style), (Voice). This should set them to off. Turn on the SYX midifiler software you downloaded to you computer. If the software has an option "Waiting to receive" turn it on. Press the function (button) use (- BWD) or (+ FWD) to browse through the functions.
Set the following functions to on or off. (See page 95 or 96 of the Yamaha DJX Manual)
a.) Set function #81 Remote Channel to Channel 16.
b.) Set function #82 Keyboard Out to ON.
  4. Select #86 for Bulk Dump which downloads all user settings, samples, and other settings you have set the DJX up to hold in memory. Or you can select #88 for a Sample Dump that downloads only the samples you have saved to your DJX.
  5. When you see the BULKSEND or SMPLSEND in your DJX-1 LCD display, it should change to YESBULKSND? or YESSMPLSND?
  6. Now press the (+) button and the display should change to YESSURE? Pressing the (+) button again will begin the transmission. You will need to turn on the SYX Midfiler software on your computer to begin receving the transmission.
  7. It will then download the DJX information to your computer. After if is done the DJX display will read YESBULK SEND? again.
  8. (IMPORTANT) Once it has finished downloading to the computer. Save the information downloaded to your computer on the syx midifiler software. Name the file something that will be easy for you to remember.

Uploading from your computer to the djx:

  1. Set-up the cables.
  2. Turn on your computer
  3. Turn on your DJX
  4. Turn on the syx midi filer software.
  5. In the following order press these buttons on time. (Song), (Style), (Voice). This should set them to off.
  6. Press the (Style) button again.
  7. Set the midi filer software on your computer to send/transmit the file information you have saved. The djx will automatically restore the saved files. (See page 98)
