Restoration in Berlin:
Bruesselerstrasse 15
Installation
Background of this work
A friend of mine recommended some vacant
rooms in Bruesselerstrasse 15.
When I decided to rent two adjacent rooms, which faced
north and south, the landlord suggested me to rent another
room. He told me that a crazy man used to rent the room.
Certainly it looked abnormal.
From my past experience I cannot ignore a person, who
is labeled as "Crazy." I wanted to understand the cause
of his insanity. Hence I decided to live in the room to
find out. If, for example, the cause of his insanity was
due to the living condition; i.e. very little sunlight,
faced the back of a school, existence of an evil spirit,
etc... I should become insane as well. (As a security
of my sanity, I also rented the other room, which faced
south.)
I decided to clean up the madman’s room in order to change
the dark image of the room, which was held by both the
neighbors and myself. Although I had some difficulty taking
off the triple layered wallpapers on a moldy wall, I managed
to re-paint the entire wall in white typical German stye.
During this project, I decided to leave one side of the
wall unpainted and to saw a figure as a memorial souvenir
of the previous condition of the room.
I showed this room in September 2002. |
