Welcome to R's MUGEN characters page, a.k.a:
 Dan's Saikyou-ryuu Dojo! |
 |
Please do not link directly to the files on this site. I like to have a
sense of the amount of usage they are seeing. Thanks!
Also, thanks to
www.saikyo.com for graciously
allowing me to use the neon Dan sign above. If you like the sign or Dan the
character, please visit their page!
If I ever make another character, I will put a table of contents here. And I
know that'll make the page even uglier so that I'll have to fix it. But for
now, you can just scroll down a little bit to see:

(Tatsui no Gadou ni mezameta Dan)
After a long wait, version 1.01 of Dan Hibiki for the MUGEN engine is now
available. Dan is only compatible with the latest release of MUGEN,
2000.06.27. He will not work at all with earlier versions. Furthermore, he
uses many new engine features and is not backwards-convertable. Please read
dan.txt for the move list, legal disclaimer, etc.
Due to
the size of Dan's sound file, I am offering the sounds as a separate
download. I do urge you to download _some_ sounds, since they are a critical
part of Dan's, umm, "skills." The nasty-quality sounds are 11 kHz,
8-bit mono. The good-quality sounds are 22 kHz, 8-bit mono, and the
best-quality sounds are 44 kHz, 16-bit mono.
Unless you have 8 extra megs of RAM to burn and don't mind large
downloads, the good-quality sounds are probably your best choice. The
nasty-quality sounds are every bit as grating and unpleasant as their name
suggests, and are to be avoided unless you have a 300-baud modem. The
best-quality sounds don't sound that much better than the good-quality
sounds when played back in MUGEN... but the potential is there, and the
attitude is certainly there.
Read dan.txt
Download Dan's graphics and code (about 600 K zipped)
Download Dan's sounds (nasty quality, about 1 MB
zipped)
Download Dan's sounds (good quality, about 2 MB
zipped)
Download Dan's sounds (best quality, about 10 MB
zipped)
Bug fixes
raziel notified me of a problem with erroneous helper binding. You can get
a workaround here. The fix is incorporated in Dan's
.zip above, so you only need this file if you already downloaded Dan v1.01
prior to this notice.
About the name
"Tatsui no Gadou ni mezameta Dan" is, of course, a play on
"Satsui no Hadou ni mezameta Ryu", which is commonly rendered
(inaccurately) into English as "Dark Ryu" or "Evil Ryu",
or more accurately "Ryu who has awakened to the waves of murderous
intent." (There are supposedly further nuances related to Hadou as the
name of a fighting style, or some such, but as I am not familiar with this
I will not mention it further.)
Here, "Tatsui" is a nonce word formed out of "tatsu" of
"tassuru", meaning to attain or surpass, and "i" (of
"erai") which means greatness or excellence. "Gadou" is
another nonce word, this one coined by Capcom, which refers to Dan's
"self-taught" style. So, the title can be rendered as "Dan
who has awakened to the surpassing excellence of his self-taught style."
In other words, the same Dan as always. :P
For those with enough
Japanese to follow this discussion, just look at the kanji and all will be
made clear.
General remarks
The character of Dan Hibiki, including but not limited to his sprites,
sounds and movements, is the intellectual property of Capcom. The author
claims no ownership of the above. The original CNS code in this distribution
is the intellectual property of the author, who allows free use of it for
non-commercial purposes subject to the limitations outlined in
dan.txt.
Please buy the original games and
support Dan's creators.
Other work in progress
SFA3 Guy is postponed due to lack of interest/ability. There are some Guys
appearing now, so it's not much of a loss. I have some vague ideas for a
new project, but we'll see if they come to fruition or not.
