SPORTS CHANBARA(Ishu)

Is the sword stronger than the spear, or otherwise? Which is more competent in fighting, the nito-ryu or the yari? How about a Musashi Miyamoto versus Kojiro with a pole? We are very interested in observing matches. A match is not simply decided due to the defference in the length of equipment, not to mention contestant's ability. A longer sword can, of course, be more advantageous in terms of the maai, which allows the holder to defend and attack. Yet, when the opponent gets too close to him or gets hold of his equipment, he is then barred in his movement by his own equipment. Thus, it is often observed that a short sword surpasses a long sword in matches, such as a tanto against a kodachi, or a tanto against a choken. The same thing is applied to matches such as a yari against a kodachi, or a nito-ryu against a yari. Meanwhile, the thrust of the yari is very linear, and involves no more elements than needed. Nagekomitsuki is, in particular, supposed to a very reasonable kind of handling. Ita effectiveness needs good control. Some postures such as seen in Japanese kendo, which places a swordsman's front body right towards his opponent, are considered to be uncompetitive in Ishu matches. There are such variations in this division to attract much attention.
