The Seison-kaku was built in 3rd year of Bunkyu(1863) by MAEDA Nariyasu, the 13th lord of Kaga clan, for his mother Shinryu-in to live in comfortable retirement. The villa, located in a part of Kenroku-en garden where the Takezawa Palace once stood, was first called the Tatsumi-shin-den(or Southeast New Palace)because it lies to the southeast of Kanazawa castle.Later the name was changed to the Seison-kaku when Kenroku-en was opened to the general public in the 7th year of Meigi(1874).
